By and large, this was a police case. In part determined by the law. But I was intrigued by one fact in this case. For some it might not be of particular importance. But it was precisely on its account that I, without the slightest hesitation, decided to tear myself away from office routine and undertake a short trip. I had to meet some people. Perhaps they could help me”.
I could clearly imagine the picture: the dog digging up the damp ground, desperately going through it with its paws, the loud barking, shaking the cold morning air and dissipating further in the dense fog. Two young people are trying to pull the enraged dog away from the patch of dirt by the river. And suddenly, from underneath the clods of dirt the dog is kicking back, a white spot appears. And only when the young man removes the lumps of wet clay himself, he is able to see that this is a woman’s hand. Her fingers are soiled dirt. The girl standing next to him takes two small steps back and the morning air is cut with the desperate, heart-rending scream of terrible fright. She is screaming with every fiber of her being, and a minute later shaking with shock and fright presses herself against the paled young man.
A middle-aged man is heading down the wet grass there closer to the trees by the river where two cars are parked – a police car and an ambulance. Next to them a small group of people had gathered. “Her body with the disfigured face was buried right over there behind the rocks. Do you know what struck me? How meticulously, I would even say with what care, her eyes were cut out. Only an experienced surgeon could have done it this way. I would say that we don’t have an ordinary murderer,” says forensic medical examiner.
“Detective chief inspector Kelly, Scotland Yard. May I have a minute of your time?’
We walked into the living room and I silently pointed to an armchair. I sat down across from him. He quickly looked around and asked.
‘Lawrence?” said the guest, “Lieutenant Lawrence? Lawrence of Arabia I suppose?’
I was listening to him silently.
‘Over there in England, two young people accidentally stumbled upon the buried body of a woman with cut out eyes not far from London. It was found by a dog during their morning walk. The dog began to dig the ground with its paws and when the owner tried to pull it away, he saw the hand of the dead young woman. The young people immediately called the police.
I was silent.
‘In Venice, the young woman’s ears have been cut off.’
I did not utter a word.
‘And do you know what these two murders share besides all the other things?
I shrugged my shoulders in perplexity.
‘That soon after the discovery of the bodies, you were spotted not far from the location, where they were discovered. If in the case of small Venice this can be somehow explained, I have to note that London is a big city and if it is actually a coincidence that it is a pretty big coincidence.’
