Jack Lawrence is a top manager at a medical charity trust. He sets out to investigate the murder of a young woman, whose body was found on the bank of a river. The victim’s eyes were meticulously cut out. What are Lawrence’s motives? Lawrence tells Detective Chief Inspector Kelly, who calls on him following a second similar murder in Venice and who suspects him of committing the crime, that the young woman was killed for the rejuvenation of some unidentified very old and wealthy famous lady. According to him, the Trust oversees ethics compliance and his own investigation falls within the scope of his professional duties. Kelly does not believe him. So, Lawrence gives the name of the first victim. The name is so far not known to the police. After a long conversation and explanation, Lawrence convinces Kelly to communicate from time to time on this case.
In order to find the suspected serial killer, Lawrence tries to get in contact with sprightly wealthy old widows, and later find a young woman of incredible beauty with emerald green eyes. But was he telling DCI Kelly the truth? In reality, Lawrence is not operating alone and heads a small team of experienced investigation professionals. So who is this strange Jack Lawrence after all? Why is he so seriously and persistently trying to find at least some clues in different countries? And how do you find a serial killer who is lying in hiding? The secrets of the past and present will finally be uncovered.
But there is more to come. Love and betrayal, real tragedy, and sometimes humour, are all part of this story, as well as the responsibility of important people and the very peculiar functioning of an old brain.
